Telescope Making

Telescope Making Books

The following books I regard as good books on telescope making:

Books for the beginner

Texereau, Jean. How to Make a Telescope, 2nd English edition, Willmann-Bell, 1984.

This book is probably the best book for the beginner who wants to grind his own mirror and built the telescope.

Thompson, Allan J. Making your own Telescope, Sky Publishing Corporation, 1947.

Also a good book on telescope making.

Books for the advanced telescope maker

Ingalls, Albert G. Amateur Telescope Making Volumes 1, 2 and 3, Willmann-Bell, 1996.

This books covers the whole of telescope making from it's earliest days. It lacks the newer modern day techniques though.

Kriege, David & Berry, Richard. The Dobsonian Telescope, Willmann-Bell, 1997.

This book is a must for everyone that wants to built a Dobsonian telescope from 16 - 40 inches in aperture. The book mostly focuses on the building of the telescope as it advises to buy the optics but contains a chapter on large mirror making. Also see Mel Bartel's page on large mirror grinding.

Mackintosh, Allan. Advanced Telescope Making Techniques, 2 volumes Optical and Mechanical, Willmann-Bell, 1986.

This book is mostly concerned with the making of Maksutov telescopes but also contains much usefull information for other telescope makers.

Suiter, Harold. Star Testing Astronomical Telescopes, Willmann-Bell, 1994.

A must for anyone who wants to star-test a telescope.
